Mini shin guards: size and protection
Mini shin guards cover a smaller area of the leg. They may feel less bulky, but less coverage is a real trade-off: a smaller pad does not automatically provide the same protection as a larger one. Choose for your fit and protection needs, not a professional player's appearance.
ProductsCoverage matters
The shell, padding, fit and area covered all matter. A pad cannot protect an area it does not cover, and no shin guard prevents every injury. Do not assume that a rigid shell makes size irrelevant.
What the football rules require
IFAB Law 4 requires suitable material and an appropriate size to provide reasonable protection, with the shin guards covered by socks. There is no universal minimum measurement in centimetres, but this is not permission to use any size. Check your competition's rules, especially for children.
Compare actual measurements
The Shinster Elite Shield size chart lists S at 14 × 8 cm and L at 19 × 8.5 cm. These are product dimensions, not a universal mini-size standard. Compare them with your shin, check ankle and knee clearance, and make sure the coverage is suitable. Age alone cannot determine a child's size.
Keep the pad in position
Use football socks and, if needed, a suitable sleeve or holder. Try running, turning and bending your ankle before playing. If the pad moves, adjust its support and fit; do not automatically choose a smaller pad.
Personalise only after choosing the fit
If the available Shinster size fits your needs, you can add your own photo or text. Check the current product page for availability and price. A personal design changes the appearance, not the protection rating or competition requirements.

FAQ
Are mini shin guards allowed in matches?
Not automatically. IFAB requires suitable material and an appropriate size providing reasonable protection, covered by socks. Also check the rules of your competition.
Do small pads protect as much as larger pads?
Not necessarily. Smaller pads cover less of the leg; material, padding, fit and coverage all affect protection. Do not assume equal protection without relevant testing.
Which size should a child wear?
Compare the manufacturer's measurements with the child's shin and check fit and coverage with their coach or parent. Do not choose solely by age or always size down.
Does Shinster currently sell mini pads?
Check the product page for current models and availability. Elite Shield comes in S (14 × 8 cm) and L (19 × 8.5 cm); these should not be treated as automatically suitable mini pads for everyone.
