Shin Guards Under or Over Socks? The Right Way

Shin guards go under football socks, fully covered. IFAB Law 4 also requires suitable material and an appropriate size providing reasonable protection.

The correct order

1. Put on your base or grip socks if you use them.
2. Position the shin guard according to its manufacturer's instructions. A sleeve with a pocket may hold the pad; other sleeves go over it.
3. Pull the football socks over the guard so it is fully covered.

Different pads use straps, sleeves or other holders. There is no single setup that suits every product or player.

Check the position before playing

Centre the pad on the intended shin area. Check that it provides appropriate coverage without restricting the ankle or knee. Test walking, running, turns and crouching while wearing your normal kit.

If it slips

Check the pad's shape and placement, the fit of the socks, and the sleeve or holder. Worn socks can lose support. A different holder may help; automatically switching to a smaller pad can reduce coverage without solving the cause.

If you use tape outside the socks, IFAB requires it to match the colour of the part of the sock it covers. Avoid a fit that causes pain, tingling or numbness; stop and readjust if that happens.

Left and right

Follow any left/right marking and the manufacturer's guidance. Not every brand has the same shape or fitting system. Check both legs separately.
