Shin Guard Sizes by Age: Kids' Fitting Guide
Age is only a starting point. Compare actual pad dimensions, shin coverage and movement before choosing a child’s shin guards.

A child's age does not determine their shin guard size. Brands use different sizing systems, and children of the same age can have very different proportions. Use age as a reminder of what to check, not as a rule for ordering S or L.
An age-by-age fitting checklist
| Age | What to check |
|---|---|
| 4–6 | Look for a genuinely suitable junior model; the smallest adult pad may still be unsuitable. Ask the coach about required coverage. |
| 7–8 | Compare the manufacturer's actual measurements with the child's shin, not just the age label. |
| 9–10 | Check fit again after growth and test running and turning with the match socks on. |
| 11–12 | Recheck regularly during growth spurts; last season's fit may no longer be suitable. |
| 13–14 | Choose by current fit and coverage, not by automatically switching to an adult size. |
Measure, then try the pad on
With the knee bent, measure the available space between below the kneecap and above the ankle. Follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions rather than treating that measurement as a universal pad-length formula. The pad should cover the intended shin area without restricting the knee or ankle.
Have the child walk, run, turn and crouch. Check that the pad stays centred and does not dig in. A pad can be too small as well as too large: do not automatically size down between two options.
Actual Shinster dimensions
The Elite Shield size chart lists S: 14 × 8 cm and L: 19 × 8.5 cm. These are product measurements, not guaranteed age ranges. Compare the current product details with the child's leg. If neither size gives appropriate fit and coverage, choose a different model rather than forcing a fit.
Coverage is part of protection
Material, padding, coverage and fit all matter. A rigid shell does not make pad size irrelevant, and no shin guard prevents every injury. IFAB Law 4 requires suitable material and an appropriate size providing reasonable protection, with the pads covered by socks. Check any additional youth competition rules with the club.
Personalisation comes after fit
If a Shinster size is suitable, a photo or name can make it personal. It does not improve the protection rating or guarantee that a child will remember to wear it. Check the kit before training and matches.
FAQ
There is no universal size. Compare the specific model's dimensions and check coverage and movement with the child.
